How to Teach Your Child to Put Their Face in the Water (Without Tears)

For many kids, “face in the water” is the biggest barrier to swimming confidence. The good news: most children don’t need pressure—they need tiny steps, repetition, and a sense of control.

Here are parent-friendly games and progressions that help kids ages 5+ feel comfortable, one win at a time.

Start with the goal (what “success” looks like)

Success isn’t “full underwater swimming” on day one. Start with:

  1. mouth in water
  2. nose in water
  3. eyes in water
  4. full face dip
  5. short underwater glide

Step-by-step games that work

Game 1: Bubble Mouth

Have them put lips in the water and blow bubbles for 2 seconds.

Game 2: “Smell the Soup”

Nose in water for one breath (quick in/out).

Game 3: “Submarine Eyes”

Eyes in water for 1 second, then pop up and smile.

Game 4: Sink the Chin, Then the Face

Count: “1–2–3 dip.” Keep it predictable.

Game 5: Treasure Tap

Drop a toy on the step. They touch it with fingers first, then nose, then forehead.

Where goggles help (especially for kids who hate water in eyes)

Some kids resist because water stings their eyes or they panic when they can’t see. A comfortable pair of kids swim goggles (ages 5+) can help them feel safer during practice—especially with:

  • anti-fog lenses (clear vision = calmer)
  • a soft silicone seal (less leaking into eyes)
  • easy adjustment (so they don’t feel “trapped”)
  • straps that don’t pull hair (less pre-swim resistance)
